The Smyphony of Life

The wind chimes on the front porch make such beautiful sounds as they dance in the chilly January breeze. Ringing out random, unskilled notes, these homespun melodies cause me to reflect upon the life-giving Spirit of the Lord and how He moves us in and out of one another’s lives.

Time and again, the Bible likens the Holy Spirit to some form of air current: He breathed life into our lungs at creation (Genesis 2:7) and, as a mighty, rushing wind, He filled us again on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:2). The scriptures that help teach us how to live righteous lives have been “breathed out by God.” (2 Timothy 3:16), and it is the Spirit of God who breathed new life into a valley of dead, dry bones (Ezekiel 37:9-10).

Like the chimes on the porch, this “Spirit Wind” gently shifts us into shared spaces as He blows through our lives. Sometimes through gently brushing by and sometimes through a more significant impact, our lives touch one another, ringing out in divine purpose, creating a beautiful ensemble. Made for relationship–first with our Creator, secondly with one another–He divinely connects us, just as a composer purposely places one note on the staff next to another. Each relationship, each “chance” meeting, each interaction with someone else…all are intentional and full of hidden purpose.

As the chimes of our lives ring out, our Master Conductor can even turn tones of dissonance into an orchestral masterpiece if we just allow Him to lead us from one measure to the next. Loving and forgiving all, we must hold tight to those who have been placed alongside us to walk in one accord; likewise, we must lovingly release those whose season with us is complete. The holding is usually much easier than the releasing. But each note has it’s own, specific timing; one held too long or released too quickly can ruin the entire song.

Whether we find ourselves in a season of relational crescendo or diminuendo, we have to remember to walk in the unforced rhythms of God’s grace (Matthew 11:28-30), where there is no need to fear losing the harmony in our lives. Closely watching the motion of our Heavenly Conductor’s baton, listening for the symbiosis between our spirit with His, and submitting to His lead, we will be kept in perfect unity with Him and with those whom He has blessed us to harmonize through this symphony of life with.

Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord, – Ephesians 5:19 (AMP)

I’m ready, God, so ready, ready from head to toe. Ready to sing, ready to raise a God-song – Psalm 108:1 (MSG)

I'm a lover of Jesus who occasionally likes to throw her thoughts out here, mostly as an altar, to remember the paths along which the Lord has taken me, but also as an encouragement to whomsoever. :)
