Get Moving!

I had a deadline to meet. So I sat there for hours, straining my brain, staring at my computer screen, trying to come up with my next blog entry. As hard as I tried to even come up with a topic, everything in my head remained blank. So, finally, I gave up and went outside to do some work that felt more productive. Then, through the things I was doing, God started to speak to me about what to write.

I kind of laughed inside and thought, “Well this is awesome, God, but why didn’t you tell me that when I was still in the house at the computer screen?!”

His answer?

“I don’t often tell people what I want them to do when they’re just sitting there.”

Wow. Okay. That’s truth with some hurtin’ on it!

Noah walked with God. God said make yourself an ark…and I will establish my covenant with you.
God told Abraham, Go to a land I will show you and I will make you a great nation.
Jesus to Peter, Come with me…and I will teach you to become a fisher of men.

Verbs are an important part of our walk with God! I mean…just look at that phrase, “our walkwith God!” It’s an action-oriented phrase. If I’m just sitting around, what could I possibly encounter that would inspire me to write something that would inspire you? Aside from breathing, I don’t really “need” God to help me just sit there. But when I got out and started doing something, I found I needed Him to speak to me, to strengthen me, to guide me, and to keep me safe.

It’s the same way in other areas of our lives. Sometimes, it’s like we’re just sitting around waiting on God to provide us with our big breakthrough. We know He has spoken big vision into our lives so now we’re just going to sit here and wait for Him to make it all happen. Right?! Not so much. Usually, God requires some kind of effort on our part to make our dreams turn into our realities. The fact is, He knows we don’t tend to have as much gratitude for the things that are just handed to us. There is much more appreciation for the things that we strived for, prayed for, waited on, and believed in…even when it all seemed to be beyond our grasp.

I mean, how many new people are you going to tell about Jesus while you’re in your house today? I seriously doubt the Great Commission is going to be achieved from an armchair. God wants us mobilized so we can affect as many people as possible every day.

I’m not saying there’s no room for that quiet, one-on-one time with God. We SHOULD have that on a regular basis. And there are also occasions that God will call us into a season of rest. But I don’t see Him keeping us in those kinds of places for extended periods of time. He expects us to come to Him, get refreshed, and then use our renewed energy and strength to do the things He has called us to do.

Yes, we are to pray about the things to which God has called us. We need to seek His wisdom and His guidance. But, once we’ve done that, we need to get moving, trusting in the Holy Spirit to guide us. It’s like a wise pastor once said, “You need to be prayed-up.” Being prayed-up simply means: You’ve sought God by opening your day with prayer and renewing your focus on Him. You’re establishing the fact that you’re seeking His Will and relying upon His strength and wisdom to lead you. You’ve listened to Him and responded to His urgings. Now you’re ready to move forth and do what He has already equipped you to do, trusting in the Holy Spirit to guide you throughout the day.

For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He hides away sound and godly Wisdom and stores it for the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with Him); He is a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity, that He may guard the paths of justice; yes, He preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and fair dealing [in every area and relation]; yes, you will understand every good path. – Psalm 2:6-9 (AMP)

You see, God gives us wisdom as we seek Him and He stores in our hearts and minds the things that we’ll need to live our lives well and to achieve all that He has placed within us. In Him, we gain an understanding that lines up with His heart and it resides deep within us until we need it. Then, the Holy Spirit will bring those things to our remembrance as we need them to make appropriate decisions throughout the day.

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit—the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.John 14:26 (HCSB)

So I implore you, while you’re dreaming that God-sized dream, find a way to put some action behind it. Write down some goals and pray over them. Ask God to show you which ones to keep, which ones to toss out, and how to prioritize the list. Then, just start going down the list and tackling the tasks one by one. As you begin to move in your calling, you’ll start build the experience, confidence, and momentum you need to keep growing in that dream until it becomes a full reality. Please don’t misinterpret this as advice to jump ahead of God’s timing. This is simply an encouragement for you to get up, get out, and go on a walk with God. As a lamp unto your feet, He will make your paths straight and He will show you how to go from where you are to where He dreams for you to be.

I'm a lover of Jesus who occasionally likes to throw her thoughts out here, mostly as an altar, to remember the paths along which the Lord has taken me, but also as an encouragement to whomsoever. :)
