Likewise, I believe this is how our hearts connect with the Savior when our lips part in prayer. At times, we haven’t the words to adequately convey our deepest yearnings, for the things of the spirit cannot always be expressed within the limitations of mere human discourse. So we pray in the beautiful language of Heaven…each sound reverberating within the heart of God. Some utterances can be easily understood and some are so profound they evade human apprehension. Yet all combine to form a harmony between our spirit and the mighty Spirit of the Lord.
As our Creator focuses upon our hearts rather than our outward expressions, our seemingly meager communication offerings can miraculously begin to transcend human levels of articulation. They are converted into perfection as they are translated by His Spirit. Within the harmonious spirit realm–where God’s heart and ours are fused together–we find how true it is that He chooses the simplest things of this world to confound the wise: simple people, simple faith, simple prayers. In our simplest prayers–with the least number of complicated words, with tears, groanings, and shuddered whispers in the dark–we speak voluminously to the heart of God.
The Pharisees desired to be heard and exalted by God AND men who would marvel at their wisdom and eloquence. But the Lord was repulsed by that kind of prayer; He called us to come to Him as little children, allowing the elementary melodies of our hearts to spill forth, raw and earnest. To the world and the spiritually dull, our spirit-prayers may sound foolish and ineffective. But to God, the most simple, fervent prayers that flow from the deep wells of our spirits to His, resonate within Him as a beautifully composed symphony.
My prayer today is that everyone would find themselves free of any law that would bind them to pray in some rote fashion established by religiosity, and instead, allow themselves to be immersed in the Spirit of our Living God…praying freely, simply, and passionately. If you already know this freedom, please join me in praying for others to find it as well. If you don’t yet know it, just ask God to receive it; then engage your spirit, open your mouth, and begin to experience it now. God knows you, He loves you, and He longs to hear from you. It’s a “come as you are” invitation. 🙂
