Nepo Baby

There has been a lot of talk in the “Hollywood news” lately about “nepo babies.” This term is used to refer to the offspring of notable figures who others feel have been given some kind of unfair advantage in becoming successful and/or powerful simply because of their family tree.

The main reason people without “special connections” don’t like nepotism is that they feel it’s unfair to them because they have had to “earn” their way through life while these nepo babies have access to unearned resources and unmerited favor. I mean…the audacity of it all! Just because NBs have access to all these things doesn’t mean they should use it! They could just as easily choose to say no and try to make their own way.

But come on… why would they do that?!

See I think, if the nay-sayers were actually nepo babies themselves, they would better understand that all this “unfair” access isn’t the fault of the privileged ones. It’s simply a byproduct of their heritage. And I can say that because…

I AM a nepo baby!

You see, I am a daughter of the Most High King and because of that, I have been given a great number of advantages that I otherwise wouldn’t have had outside of my relationship with my Father. I can enter the Throne Room at any time and have personal, intimate, direct access to the King. He has given me His ear and shared with me His strategies and secrets. My Dad even goes to war for me, driving out great and powerful enemies, then preparing a table for me, right in their midst. The fact of the matter is, I have access to all His Kingdom resources, unmerited favor, supernatural power, radical gifts, divine health, crazy joy, and peace that makes no sense…all because of my lineage! Like, why on earth would I reject those advantages?!

I realize, to many readers, this concept may seem a little juvenile and perhaps even wonderfully metaphorical. But as believers, it’s the reality we should live in. Jesus invites us to follow Him with childlike faith because children of a Good Father don’t question whether or not we’ll have what we need. We know He will provide for us, according to His riches and glory. We don’t have to wonder if He hears us; He promises that we can be confident asking for anything according to His will and He will hear us. And when the “ask” seems ludicrously big, He invites us to remember that He has called us to do even greater things than Jesus’ did when He walked the earth…heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons.

So call it what you want…nepotism, unmerited favor, blessings, whatever! But I’m down for unashamedly taking God at His Word and really receiving all that the Bible says we can have. Now, here’s where Godly nepotism differs from worldly nepotism: all of this is done, not for my gain, but for His glory, because He is SO worthy of it! (Obviously, you can’t out-give God, so chances are, there will be blessings attached to it. But the blessings just aren’t the motive.)

And THIS kind of Godly nepotism is not unfair.

Oh, it would be, if just a select few could have access to it. But it’s not an exclusive invitation. The fact is, I wasn’t always part of the family. I was a messy, angry, misguided orphan. But I’ve been adopted, chosen as His own, and I am now His child and an heir to everything He has. And that same opportunity is open to you.

It is the King’s desire that NONE would be lost. So much so that He sent His only, perfect Son to die on the Cross, spilling His blood in an epic battle for our freedom. And while we were still sinners, He died for us…choosing us before we chose Him. Forgiving us, even as we were in active rebellion. So no, the benefits of being in His Kingdom are not unfair to anyone…no one but Him, that is. And yet He still chose to do it. Jesus made this supernatural adoption, and all the “Godly nepotism” that comes with it, available to all of us, because it’s His desire that we would all come into the saving grace of His mercy, walk in His power, and take back all that the enemy has stolen. And don’t get it twisted. You can’t earn this thing on your own, even if you wanted to. You need simply to believe.

And as you call upon Jesus’ name, Holy Spirit will come to live within you, guiding you into all Truth, and you will find yourself as one who is willing to die to all your overly complicated, failing agendas, simply trusting Him to be the Lord of your life, making all your paths straight and giving you everything necessary to be successful, both in this life and the next.

And at this point, I believe you’ll begin to see…being a nepo baby isn’t such a bad deal, after all.

I'm a lover of Jesus who occasionally likes to throw her thoughts out here, mostly as an altar, to remember the paths along which the Lord has taken me, but also as an encouragement to whomsoever. :)
